Ones to watch– Clock Opera

Band name: Clock Opera

Hailing from: London

Catch them at: The Wedgewood Rooms

Clock Opera is really one man, Guy Connelly, who makes a fine line in what was termed by The Guardian as “chop-pop”. He takes sounds and he cuts them up and re-arranges them into different, more complex sounds. This means that you are almost never listening to what you think you are listening to. What might sound like a trumpet or harp may in fact be a piece of vocal or guitar track blasted through various effects and samplers then cut up and played backwards. Lyrics are put together in the same way– pages of magazines cut up and rearranged into found poetry. Yes, it is as complex as it sounds. But the end result is beautiful, melodic and melancholy and has captured the imagination of all the right people. Signed to uber-trendy record label Moshi Moshi, Clock Opera will be releasing their next single “Lesson No 7″ on 3rd October, but it is already getting heavy airplay on the radio. Live, Clock Opera become a four-piece, padding out the sounds. Fragile, beautiful melodies build with a crescendo of beats to something much larger and grander than is belied by it’s cut-up origins, creating something between Balearic house and dream pop. Their electronica, combined with Connelly’s emotionallly raw vocals is bound to win fans quickly, so watch them now before everyone else catches on!
