Band name: Clock Opera

Hailing from: London

Catch them at: The Wedgewood Rooms

Clock Opera is really one man, Guy Connelly, who makes a fine line in what was termed by The Guardian as “chop-pop”. He takes sounds and he cuts them up and re-arranges them into different, more complex sounds. This means that you are almost never listening to what you think you are listening to. What might sound like a trumpet or harp may in fact be a piece of vocal or guitar track blasted through various effects and samplers then cut up and played backwards. Lyrics are put together in the same way– pages of magazines cut up and rearranged into found poetry. Yes, it is as complex as it sounds. But the end result is beautiful, melodic and melancholy and has captured the imagination of all the right people. Signed to uber-trendy record label Moshi Moshi, Clock Opera will be releasing their next single “Lesson No 7″ on 3rd October, but it is already getting heavy airplay on the radio. Live, Clock Opera become a four-piece, padding out the sounds. Fragile, beautiful melodies build with a crescendo of beats to something much larger and grander than is belied by it’s cut-up origins, creating something between Balearic house and dream pop. Their electronica, combined with Connelly’s emotionallly raw vocals is bound to win fans quickly, so watch them now before everyone else catches on!

Band Name: Polarsets

Hailing from: Whitley Bay

Catch them at: XYZ Stage at Little Johnny Russells

Friends from school, Rob (vocals/guitar), Mike (bass) and James (drums) formed in their native town of Whitley Bay and after an inspiring trip to Ibiza set to work on their tropical upbeat indie sound; breathing with escapism, intricate rhythms, euphoric dance beats and an undercurrent of energetic indie.

Following Kitsuné’s release of their critically acclaimed debut single ‘Sunshine Eyes’ Polarsets embarked on their first Nationwide tour, garnering support from the likes of Rob Da Bank, Huw Stephens, Tom Robinson at BBC 6 music, Glastonbury festival founder Michael Eavis and Zane Lowe, who infact declared ‘Sunshine Eyes’ as his “Next Hype Track”. Prior to this the band had earned a fierce following in Newcastle, spending time putting on club-nights and spreading their word, as well as amassing support slots to Ellie Goulding, Two Door Cinema Club, Fenech Soler and Everything Everything.

New single ‘Morning’ and b-side ‘Sunset’ see Polarsets continue to set their omnipresent upbeat escapist dance-driven sound. Harnessing euphoria laden synths and carnival styled percussion to create a cacophony of tropical indie dance floor summer beats.

Polarsets are now set to team up with Neon Gold Records and Moda for the release of their upcoming single ‘Morning’ on August 8th (physical 7”) and October 3rd (digitally).

In the meantime you can download a free copy of ‘Morning’ (Midnight Lion remix) here

Catch them on the XYZ Magazine stage at Little Johnny Russells at 9:30pm

The background

Ollie, Perry and Sam make up Lucky One Dies First. There was also an inflatable crocodile at one point but he fell victim to a crowd-surfing incident in Germany. They are regulars on the Portsmouth hardcore scene and have a steady fanbase of loyal supporters. 2011 is THE year for these boys, having just returned from a tour of Europe where they played to increasingly frantic crowds and pulled a storming set out of the bag for their appearance at Olgas Rock.

Interesting Facts

Things got so hardcore at Olgas that one of their heroes (Mike from A Wilhelm Scream) was heard to mutter “whooooooah” and he then wore one of their tshirts for his own performance — a proud moment, indeed. They are more mental than a box of chocolate frogs and louder than a Messerschmitt bomber. Things will get sweaty, so a towel is advised. Their set at Southsea Fest will feature a special, one-off appearance by a “mystery” guest, so get down there to catch him in action!

For fans of: Shouting, swearing, sweating, guitar riffs, offensive merchandise.

Band name: Attack! Vipers!

Hailing from: Portsmouth

Catch them at: Southsea DIY stage at The One Eyed Dog

Attack! Vipers! are one of Portsmouth’s biggest musical success stories, so who better to have headlining the Southsea DIY stage than this exhilarating four-piece? Attack! Vipers! are in their 5th year and have played all over Europe, garnering critical praise wherever they go. They play a thrilling blend of punk and melodic hardcore that can be filed under the same category as Lavotchkin (with whom they graced a split 7″) and The Suicide File, alternating beautiful melodies with searing injections of rage. In short, they are not a band that your Nan would like. However, even your Nan would enjoy an Attack! Vipers! show. Pushing the boundaries between band and audience, front-man Joe Watson makes sure he spends as much time on the floor as on the stage, ensuring levels of energy from crowds you just won’t see at other shows (see picture to the left). Meanwhile bandmates Ben, Tom and Mark provide an intricate backdrop of melodies and powerhouse riffs to keep the crowd baying for more. Their second long player, “Deadweight Revival” is out in November, so come and familiarise yourself with some of the new material before it’s release. But wear something you don’t mind getting sweaty. REALLY sweaty.

Calling your band Worship is a pretty bold move. You are giving yourself some fairly massive expectations to live up to, and potentially years worth of puns from bloggers the world over. Luckily Reading’s Worship have the music to live up to their name and the ensuing hype that has exploded following the release of their single “Collateral”. Recorded in 2010 in Norway, the bands dark, menacing electronica has been gracing the Radio One airwaves for the last couple of weeks. If you’re a fan of Radiohead, Depeche Mode or Sigur Ros then Worship will be for you. Their brilliantly atmospheric, multi-layered and dense loops wouldn’t sound out of place on the soundtrack to your favourite thiller or horror. Indeed, we expect they will be gracing multiple movie soundtracks very shortly. We love them and are sure you will too, so get to The Loft at Southsea Fest and enjoy the band in intimate surroundings before they start playing stadia. We will tell you we told you so.

Band name: Born Blonde

Hailing from: London

Catch them at: Rockfeedback stage at The Loft

This West London based five piece are comprised of Joshua Lloyd-Watson, Tom McFarland, George Day, Fraser MacColl (cousin of Bombay Bicycle Club’s Jamie) and Arthur Delaney, one of the most compelling front men to grace a stage in recent years. Arresting on record, yet live this music washes over you and takes on a whole new dimension. Soaring guitars show a belief in music’s near hallucinogenic power to catch the listener off guard and remove them from their comfort zone. Listen to their first single ‘Solar’ now, and be swept up by the band’s ethereal charm. Reminiscent of The Verve, the band have been both NME’s Radar band of the week and The Guardian’s band of the Day.

“We want to trip people out and give them a place to retreat into, but also make them want to party wildly,” says Josh

Indeed, the band partied so wildly at their single launch at their own club night Purr that they were shut down by the police. Singer Arthur explained “It was a shame as we all had a lot left in the tank, but were philosophical about it all as the best parties always end in that way. I think next month we’ll invite them down to party with us, show them a good time, and perhaps things might be able to go on a bit longer. We shall see!”

Go and watch Born Blonde whipping up a party at the Rockfeedback stage at The Loft.
